Robert Palmer, a surgeon, is returning to Ellay in the year 2097 from a medical conference in Frisco. He places his hand against the recognition screen in an LSMT (Light Speed Matter Transmission) cubicle and nothing happens.
That is, seemingly nothing happens. Actually, he is transmitted to Ellay. There was a glitch and his pattern is retransmitted back to Frisco as a kind of "echo." In effect, an identical Robert Palmer has been created. This created Palmer is a Doppelganger, a double with the status in the given society of a Nothing. The two Roberts are mortal enemies, and each seeks the destruction of the other.

This is an excellently well written science fiction novel that will change the temperature of any room that you read it in. In 2097 San Francisco, Robert Palmer a surgeon, is departing that city and heading to his hometown of Ellay via a device called Light Speed Matter Transmission Vehicle, when due to a malfunction with the machine, a clone of him is left behind while the real him is brought home. What follows is a contest of wills between the original Robert and his "echo" that leads to some exciting, unexpected twists and turns and astounding personal insights for both Robert and his double.This book's plot is very original while paying homage to science fiction greats of the past like Asimov and Ray Bradbury. Furthermore, the characters are extremely vivid with three dimensional qualities and are quite entertaining to observe. Along with these assets, the world Mr. Bruno has created where Central, South and North America are all one nation state comprised of one hundred forty individual states, and are ruled by a mysterious group known as the Elders, is an intriguing one to inhabit for two hundred and twenty five pages. Finally, by framing his story in the manner that he does, Mr. Bruno challenges the reader to pose to him or herself some profound questions about life, death, morality, and the qualities that a person possess which make others believe that they have a soul.
So, if you are looking to read an excellent science fiction novel with a first rate story and exemplary prose, you should purchase TwinSouls. I highly doubt that you will be disappointed.

It was something new for me. I found the story to be unique in it's structure and form, it held my curiosity and surprised me with it's conclusion.
I liked this book.
Frank J. Bruno has quite a few releases in his body of work at the moment but his 2010 release of 'Twinsouls A Doppelganger Novel' is one of the few which could be thought of as genre work. In it, we follow Robert Palmer in the not so distant future of 2097 where transporter technology has been created and while it appears to work seamlessly there is a tragic problem. In the novel, Palmer is returning to Ellay from a medical conference in Frisco, only after he tries to use the transporter system it appears that nothing happens.
The reality is that not only is he transported but a glitch causes him to have a copy stay behind. Now, there are two Robert Palmers and the doppelganger has a status in society of 'nothing' and the only way he can take his life back is to remove the Palmer that transported.
While I quite loved how much of an original take on the future, society, and transportation technology that this gave us - I think my main problem with the book is that there seems like a better solution would be in place for this kind of an accident. Honestly, it was a great read and the plot, pacing, character development, everything was top notch but this solution seemed a bit out of place for the rest of the society we ended up seeing. Still, a thrilling ride from start to finish as we see the secondary Palmer who we are following trying to regain the life which he feels was stolen from him.
